Another Year, Another Anzac Day

Another year, another Anzac Day. Photo attached (click to enlarge) shows the Australian & Kiwi troops disembarking at what would become known as Anzac Cove on April 25 1915. The Australian and NZ troops had in fact been on their way to England and service at the Western Front, but Turkey's decision to back Germany led to an unexpected change in plan and they landed at the Gallipoli Peninsula instead. The ANZAC troops had been trained to deal with warfare where two armies faced off with each other, but were met instead with ferocious guerrilla style warfare in the rugged hills of the Gallipoli Peninsula, trench warfare, and a weapon previously unknown to them - the hand grenade. It became a battle too far, with the numbers of ANZAC soldiers killed and wounded reaching horrendous proportions and in the end the remaining ANZACS were stealthily transported out to sea one night and taken to safety. However, it was not the end - after a period for recuperation the remaining able bodied soldiers were soon heading off to the horrors of the Western Front. Lest we forget.
